8 Things you must have as a Fresher in a Nigerian University

We have compiled a list of things that are required for a fresher to get when given admission into a university in Nigeria.

We were inspired to write this piece after hearing an hilarious remark from a new student on a famous Nigerian forum about what he should bring to school.

As ridiculous as the question may sound, it makes sense because most fresher have no clue what they’ll need in school.

8 Things you must have as a fresher

Below is a list of stuff that come to mind right now, and we will update this site as more ideas come to mind. We are  assuming in this post that the student lives in a private flat.

1. Chair and table.

This is at the top of the list since it is the major reason you are attending school. It is not a good idea to read when laying down since you run the risk of falling asleep or developing neck or back discomfort.

2. Rechargeable light.

We are all aware of DELSU’s and other Nigerian higher education institutions’ inadequate power supplies. The feeling of being powerless at night won’t be amusing. Since you would need it for reading as well, it should go together with the first item.

3. Cooking gas/stove

Unless you want to fast or depend on fast food for the whole of your schooling, this is a must have item. we don’t need to go into too much detail.

4. Buckets and storage containers

You may not be able to live in an apartment with a constant/portable water supply, necessitating the need to store water. Buckets are also required for bathing and washing.

5. Pillows and foam

After a long and stressful day, you will need somewhere to rest and get your energy back and get  ready for the next day. Except you are planing to stay up all night, looking tired and not working at 100%, We think a foam and pillow is a must have for every Fresher.

6. Personal items

This are the things that are a must have as a fresher at any Nigerian University. They include;

  • Clothing
  • A blanket
  • A sheet
  • Hair Brushes and Combs
  • Toothbrushes and Paste
  • Underwear and Bathing Suits
  • Shoes
  • Books etc.

7. Kitchen utensils

If you are planing on cooking to survive at any Nigerian University, then the following is a must have except you are planing not to cook and relay on fast food.

  • Knives
  • Saucepans; For boiling vegetables, eggs, potatoes, etc.
  • Measuring Jug
  • Blender
  • Set of pans
  • Food storage containers
  • Colander
  • Reusable water bottle, etc.

8. Secondary items

We have referred to the objects that fall under this category as “secondary” since it is possible that they do not hold the same level of significance as the elements that are mentioned above.

This includes electronics for both amusement and further study, such as a PC (personal computer), blenders, fans, curtains, and carpets or rugs, or anything else that you believe will contribute to your level of comfort.
