SSRC 2023 Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: Fellowship for Doctoral Dissertation Completion

To encourage the next generation of social scientists in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda to get their doctorates and to support their research, the Social Science Research Council provides fellowships to help fund their education. These grants are intended to help doctoral candidates conduct research on issues of international peace and security and sustainable development.

A stipend of up to US$10,000 is provided to doctorate candidates who agree to take a year off from teaching and administrative duties in order to focus on writing a dissertation that contributes to the body of knowledge on peace, security, and development.

Each year, the program hosts two workshops for the fellows to attend in order to aid them with the writing of their dissertation chapters and the completion of their doctorate theses. Workshop leaders train fellows to improve their writing for publication in academic journals and other scholarly venues.

About the Social Science Research Council (SSRC )

Editor's Recommendation

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) was founded in 1923 as an independent, international, non-profit organization. It promotes innovative research, cultivates new generations of social scientists, enhances how inquiry is done inside and between disciplines, and mobilizes essential public knowledge.

In 1923, forward-thinking members of the American Economic Association, the American Sociological Association, the American Political Science Association, and the American Statistical Association founded the Social Science Research Council, a pioneering organization with the mission of generating new insights into pressing societal issues. Representatives from the American Anthropological Association, the American Historical Association, and the American Psychological Association had joined by 1925.

Scholarship Benefit

The doctoral dissertation completion grant supports a one-year vacation from teaching and administrative duties with a salary of up to $10,000 to enable the completion of a dissertation that advances peace, security, and development-related research.
