EPFL/UM6P 100 PhDs for Africa Program for African Students
The Excellence in Africa programme (EXAF) has been developed by UM6P and EPFL to promote the development of the next generation of African researchers.
The Excellence in Africa programme (EXAF) has been developed by UM6P and EPFL to promote the development of the next generation of African researchers. By collaboration with EPFL professors, this innovative programme strives to improve their research abilities. It is founded on the notion that it will help them advance their careers and increase their economic and social influence in Africa.
The “100 PhDs for Africa” initiative is one of the three pillars of the EXAF initiative. It is intended to support science and engineering graduates who wish to pursue a PhD at an African university.

About the EPFL Global Leaders
EPFLglobaLeaders is a new doctoral fellowship programme that funds early-career academics to become pioneers in the transition to sustainable society. Forty-eight doctoral fellows will participate in a complex training programme, which includes an externship in the non-academic sector.

Scholarship Benefits
The doctoral candidates who participate in this programme will be jointly supervised by a professor from an African institution and an EPFL professor. Their PhD coursework and thesis research will be conducted at their home university, and they will spend brief periods of time at EPFL and UM6P. (summer and spring schools, workshops, conferences). Their degree will be granted by their African institution.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be a citizen of an African nation
- To hold a Master’s degree conferred after January 1, 2020, or to be in the final year of master’s studies.
- To have an exceptional academic record
- To be enrolled in an African academic institution and to dwell in an African nation throughout the PhD programme.
- To have the support of a professor from an African institution who is willing to oversee the dissertation for its entirety.
