Eligibility Requirements
The Black Academic Futures Scholarship is available for:
- Applicants who are normally resident in the United Kingdom, of Black or Mixed Black ethnicity, and have an offer for either a taught or research postgraduate degree beginning in the academic year 2025–26. This applies to both full-time and part-time DPhil and master’s courses.
- You must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for three years before the commencement date of the course for which you have received an offer. This residence must not have been for the sole purpose of pursuing full-time education. An exception to this is if you were temporarily resident outside of the UK in order to take up temporary employment and would have been resident in the UK if not for the temporary job.
- These scholarships support students from all disciplines at the University, with some funds designated for students enrolled in specialized courses.
Application Deadline
The Black Academic Futures Scholarship application deadline is late December or January. It is advisable for eligible applicant to submit their application on time.
Award Disbursement
The scholarship covers tuition and gives a grant for living expenses. Awards are issued for the entire length of your fee liability for the specified course.
How to Apply
To apply for the Black Academic Futures Scholarship, simply submit your completed graduate course application, including ethnicity information, by either the November, December, or January deadline (whichever is applicable to your course), and you will be automatically evaluated. You are not need to submit any more documentation, and there is no separate scholarship application form for these grants.
If you are eligible for these scholarships, you will be evaluated automatically, regardless of which college (if any) you choose on your graduate application form. However, some of these scholarships are only valid at specific universities, and successful applicants will be transferred to the appropriate college to accept the scholarship, if applicable.
What happens after you’ve applied?
- Academics working in your proposed field of study will assess your course application. The department will notify you of the outcome.
- All applicants who obtain a course offer and are qualified for Black Academic Futures will be evaluated for the scholarship using a cross-divisional selection process that considers academic merit and potential.
- Successful candidates will get a scholarship offer. Final college placements will also be notified for rewards that are only valid at specific colleges.
- If you are offered and accept a Black Academic Futures Scholarship, your funding is now secure as long as you meet the terms of your offer to study at Oxford.
All successful applicants will be notified via email, with the majority of offers sent out in May.
